Döner, dürüm, pita or kapsalon? A kebab guide for Porto

Short answer: at Tropical Global the kebab meat is the same — what changes is how it reaches you. A döner comes in bread, a dürüm is rolled in a thin tortilla, a pita kebab is served in pita bread, and the döner box comes in a box with fries. A kapsalon is a tray of fries topped with meat, cheese, olives, salad and sauce. Almost everything also comes with falafel, and every kebab comes with a fresh salad of cabbage, carrot and onion. We’re at Rua de Sampaio Bruno 10 in downtown Porto, open every day from 11:00 to 07:00.

What is a döner kebab?

Döner is Turkish for “rotating”: seasoned meat roasts in layers on a vertical spit and is sliced thin to order. It’s one of the best-known street foods in Europe.

On our menu, the döner kebab comes with bread, meat, sauce and salad. There’s also a version with cheese.

What’s the difference between döner, dürüm, pita and a box?

Dish How it comes Best for
Döner kebab Bread, meat, sauce and salad The classic, easy to eat by hand
Dürüm kebab Thin tortilla rolled with meat, salad and sauce Something compact to take away
Pita kebab Pita bread with meat, salad and sauce A lighter bread
Döner box Meat, fries and sauce in a box Sharing, or skipping the bread
Kapsalon Meat, fries, salad, olives, cheese and sauce Serious hunger — small or large

If you’d rather eat at the table, the kebab plate brings the meat, salad and fries together on a plate.

What is a kapsalon?

The kapsalon was born in Rotterdam, in the Netherlands, in the early 2000s. The name is Dutch for “hair salon”, because it’s said to have been invented at the request of a hair salon owner. It’s a tray of fries topped with kebab meat and cheese, finished with salad and sauce.

At Tropical Global there’s a small and a large kapsalon.

Is there a vegetarian kebab?

Yes. We have the falafel döner and falafel dürüm (both also with cheese), a falafel plate with salad and fries, and a falafel salad. On the menu, vegetarian dishes are marked with a leaf.

What does “meal” mean for a kebab?

It’s the version with fries and a drink (for the döner box, the meal adds a drink only). On the online menu every kebab shows both prices: kebab only, or as a meal.
